Sponsored by European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas and MEP Carlos Zorrinho, the first Global Leadership and Service Awards will be delivered at the Thon Hotel EU, Rue de la Loi 75, in Brussels, on the 23 February 2015.
The International Union of Materials Research Society (IUMRS) launched the Global Leadership and Service Awards in order to acknowledge the global and intersectorial relevance of the technologic and scientific field of advanced materials and nano- and bio-technologies, enablers of a broad range of key industries such as Energy, Environment, Health, Security, ICT, Food, among others.
The president of the committee delivering such distinct awards is Professor Rodrigo Martins from the Centre of Research in Materials (CENIMAT), which belongs to the Institute for Nanotechnologies, Nanomaterials and Nanosciences, I3N. I3N/CENIMAT is recognized within the top 11 Portuguese Institutes/ Centres of Excellence evaluated as exceptional by the Portuguese National Science and Technology Foundation and pioneering world work in the field of transparent and paper-based electronics.
The first Global Leadership and Service Awards aims at recognizing distinguished individuals belonging to government organizations, public/private institutions, and international companies working together, who have demonstrated outstanding leadership resulting in high impact to the global community related to the multisectorial area of materials research and education, namely with a strong impact in innovative and creative industrial applications.
The 2015 Award will be delivered to Professor doctor Mihail Roco from National Science Foundation of USA, Mr. Christos Tokamanis, from EC DG Research and Innovation and Professor Doctor P. Siffert, Secretary General of E-MRS, for their outstanding role in the implementation of advanced materials and nanotechnology initiatives at local and global levels, with a demonstrated large societal impact.
Awards committee also recognizes the long term vision of the awardees from which the world society, more interconnected than ever before, will benefit not only concerning economic sustainable development-wise, but also in terms of job creation. Particularly, the committee stresses the impact of the awardees activities in the area of Research, the core of all Innovation and sustainable developments, a promoter of the industry of the future.
