Commission on Membership Affairs

The Membership Affairs Commission   has responsibility for the following functions:

  • Support and develop and enroll Adhering Bodies of IUMRS

  • Expand the list of Institutional Affiliate members

  • Help to support and sustain the Membership experience for all Adhering Bodies. This should include maintaining communications with current and potential Adhering Bodies and Affiliates regarding IUMRS activities, and the opportunities for their participation.

  • Serve as archival trustee and protocol consultant for matters relating to IUMRS Statutes and ByLaws (both interpretation and additions), and to their compliance with requirements for our formal legal incorporated status within which we conduct business.

  • Foster and maintain substantive professional active participation and leadership as a full Scientific Union Member of ICSU, and facilitate communications with ICSU as IUMRS-ICSU Liaison.

News and Recent Activities

The Commission is currently working with several newly developing Materials Research Societies, as they plan their incorporation and new professional activities.

The Commission is preparing Guidelines that may assist appropriate organizations in seeking to join IUMRS, either as Adhering Bodies [active Societies] or as Institutional Affiliates or Professional Associates.

We welcome inquiries from individuals or institutions, organizations or corporations interested in partnership in the IUMRS mission and functions.   [Contact the Commission Chair, Dr.John Baglin, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ]

We are participating in on-going discussions led by ICSU, that seek opinions of the Scientific Community regarding policy on Open Access publication, and improved metrics of scientific achievement.      IUMRS has also accepted a Supporting Participant role in a large multi-Union application for a major ICSU Grant for 2017 - 2019.   If successful, the program would enable new access to advanced materials research facilities in the developing world.

Recent and Future Meetings

The Commission depends on on-going e-mail communications  for its interaction among current and developing Members.

It will support a strong delegation to participate in the triennial General Assembly of ICSU, to be held 19-27 October, 2017, in Taipei.
