It encourages these societies to promote interdisciplinary scientific sessions on materials at their individual meetings and to join with other societies in sponsoring joint meetings. International Conference on Electronic Materials 2008 Hilton Sydney, Sydney, Australia - 28th July to 1st August 2008 - A major activity coordinated by A-MRS over the past year has been the formulation of a proposal to establish an Australian Materials Technology Network (AMTN). A detailed proposal has been submitted for government funding of this venture. The proposed network has three main roles: to provide an information service (web-ased) for Australian industry that, among other roles, provides a nationwide database of capabilities and expertise in materials production, processing and characterization; to establish mechanisms which will promote the diffusion of materials technology to Australian industry, such as information seminars, demonstration projects and training; and to act as a conduit between materials service providers in Universities/government laboratories and industry to assist industry with materials problem solving. The executive summary of this proposal is given below. There is an intention that A-MRS activities will be administered through AMTN in the future.
- The 15th International Conference on Ion Beam Analysis was held in Cairns, Australia on July 15-20, 2001, in association with the 12th AINSE conference on Nuclear Techniques of Analysis. The latter conference has a strong focus on materials analysis; hence, the A-MRS materials community was very well represented at this meeting. There were about 240 participants, 150 from overseas.
- On December 10-15, 2000. the Australian Institute of Physics held its National Congress in Adelaide. A major focus was condensed matter physics and materials science, with particular emphasis on nanotechnology, materials for biotechnology, quantum computing, magnetic materials, materials analysis techniques and electronic and optoelectronic materials and devices. There were about 120 participants in these sessions.
- The Conference on Optoelectronic and Microelectronic Materials and Devices (COMMAD 2000) was held in Melbourne Australia on December 6-8, 2000. Of the approximately 150 attendees, about 40% were from outside Australia. A major focus of the conference was compound semiconductor materials and devices with applications in diverse areas of optoelectronics.
